The University College of Agriculture (UCA) Rawalakot, one of the constituent campuses of the University of Azad Jammu & Kashmir was established in 1980, now being converted to The University of Poonch Rawalakot. Plant Breeding and Genetics was started as a major discipline during the year 1984 and given the status of the department in 2004 and is contributing in teaching and research since then. Since 1990 the department excelled in research with start of collaborative research project with ODA/British council UK and established best laboratory with modern facilities for molecular genetics research. The department has completed 11 research projects funded by HEC, PSF, ODA, MINFAL, Agri-Canada/ PARC and AJK University with funding of about Rs. 12.1 million. The department has a dedicated and well qualified staff including 3 PhDs and Post Docs in the leading frontiers of modern Plant Breeding and Molecular Genetics. The research capabilities of the department have been recognized by high standard research publications nationally and internationally. Two members of the staff have been awarded best researcher and best teacher awards by the University of AJK and HEC during the past few years. Similarly, the three members of staff had been given prestigious status of HEC approved PhD supervisor by the Higher Education Commission, Islamabad and its scientists are continuously receiving Productive Scientists Award year after year from PCST. The department enjoys the top position in terms of number of PhDs produced and quality research publications in the University. The department is accredited by National Agriculture Education Accreditation Council (NAEAC) in X-1 category, again highest in Faculty of Agriculture, UPR. Presently, there are 15 PhD scholars enrolled in the department contributing immensely towards the research on diverse crops of national and regional importance.
