Horticulture

Horticulture is the science and art of the development, sustainable production, marketing and use of high-value, intensively cultivated food and ornamental plants. Horticultural crops are diverse, including: annual and perennial species, fruits and vegetables, decorative indoor and outdoor plants. Horticulture sector has the prime importance in Pakistan Agriculture Industry. The horticulture sector is not only producing fruits and vegetables for local consumption but also earning a handsome amount of foreign exchange through export of fruits and vegetables produced in Pakistan. In given scenario, the Department of Horticulture at University of Poonch Rawalakot, is playing an important role both in teaching and research. In terms of teaching, the Department is offering three programs including, BSc (Hons), MSc (Hons) and PhD in Horticulture. Currently, number of BSc (Hons), MSc (Hons) and PhD students are pursuing their degree programs. Department possesses a strong Faculty including one Meritorious Professor, one Associate Professor, three Assistant Professors, three Lecturers and one Research Associate. In case of research, eight research projects have been completed so far while four research projects are in progress. Two green houses have been constructed under Faculty Development Project, with ample space for research activities. Moreover, one progeny garden of various indigenous temperate fruits including apple, pear, peach, plum, apricot, walnut and blackberries has been established at Chotta Gala Research Farm. More than 200 research articles in the impact factor, international and HEC recognized journals have been published so far by this Faculty members.  

History

Since the establishment of University College of Agriculture at Rawalakot as a sub campus of University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir in 1980, the Department of Horticulture is playing a key role in study and research. Major subject in Horticulture was started with the establishment of Faculty of Agriculture. Department of Horticulture is the first to start postgraduate program, MSc (Hons) classes in 1994 and so far more than 150 students have completed their degrees from the Department. In 2004, it was given the status of full fledge Department.

Welcome to Department of Horticulture.

The Department seeks to combine excellence in education with service to the industry. In our department students are nurtured to become best Horticulture professionals or become Entrepreneurs in their own innovative way. I am sure in times to come; many students from our department will make indelible mark nationally and internationally in the field of Horticulture and make us proud. We are having hard-working students, a young and dynamic faculty, whose expertise spans the range of disciplines in Pomology, Olericulture and Floriculture. A very healthy work-culture, are the basic elements that comprise the Department of Horticulture, the hub of the institute’s academia. We hold firm belief in our ability to succeed, and we nurture an attitude of self-reliance, confidence, commitment and responsibility to the motherland that we are to serve. Such is the psychology behind the young and dynamic Horticulture department in effect, the Department of Horticulture believes in building career, enriching minds and provides a remarkable experience that lasts a life time.

I am confident that the students of the department would justify the credibility of the department by showing a high level of professional competence in their respective fields.
